Looking back our history, we realize that the following two publications have played vital roles in the breakthrough for us during the earlier years. In 1953 Haha no Tomo (Mothers' Companion) launched and three years later in 1956, Kodomo no Tomo (Children's Companion) followed. They were a magazine regarding parenting and an epoch-making picture book for children respectively, both which came out monthly. From the Kodomo no Tomo (Children's Companion) series, many popular picture books including the Guri And Gura Series by Rieko Nakagawa & Yuriko Yamawaki and Mii-chan's First Errand and other works by Akiko Hayashi (illustrations) have turned out.
In 1969, Kagaku no Tomo (Children's Science Companion), a monthly-non-fiction picture book for young readers launched. This was then an unprecedented genre in juvenile books. Publications such as Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi undoubtedly opened up new possibilities in this field.
Today we publish seven monthly-picture books in both fiction and non-fiction which cater for different age groups. In addition to this, there is one magazine aimed for the parents. This comes out monthly, as well.
Along with the above mentioned monthly publications, we have also aimed to introduce numerous distinguished books. Initially, our focus was on introducing world renowned picture books / children's literature to our Japanese readers. Choo Choo by Virginia Lee Burton, The Tales of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter and My Father's Dragon by Ruth Gannett would just be some examples. Followed by these translation publications, we have challenged and succeeded in publishing our original quality books, too. Anno's Journey Series by Mitsumasa Anno have now become well known around the world. The much-loved coming-of-age tale, Kiki's Delivery Service by Eiko Kadono and in the non-fiction genre, the Nature Photography Series also display a good example.
With the support of readership over the generations, we continue to maintain our position in providing quality children's books in various fields.
